BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method)

BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is an environmental standard that rates the sustainability of buildings in the UK. The BREEAM environmental assessment aims to minimize environmental impact by ensuring sustainability best practices are in place while also lowering organisations' costs through energy efficiency.

The BREEAM metric, which was developed in 1990 by a UK group known as the Building Research Establishment (BRE), has been exported to other European countries and regions such as the Persian Gulf. BREEAM has equivalent benchmarks in other countries, such as LEED in the U.S. and Green Star in Australia.

Although currently a voluntary program, BREEAM is expected to become a requirement for many organisations.
