VMware earnings strong, but profit takes a hit
Despite a weak economy and emerging competition, VMware's fourth-quarter earnings trounced Wall Street expectations, showing strong demand for the company's virtualisation software. But profit for the quarter took a major hit, falling 49% when compared with the same quarter a year ago.
Desktop virtualisation to save Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust £250,000 a year
Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT) is set to undergo a desktop virtualisation project, which is anticipated to save the company £250,000 a year by improving the management of its 3,000 computers over 100 sites. With an initial investment of£650,000, the KMPT has chosen a thin client strategy designed by VAR Centralis. The consultancy has been tasked with building a proof of concept based on Citrix's XenApp and Appsense. Keeping up with increasing demands in network capacity spread across 100 sites was becoming difficult for KMPT, whose staff will now utilise a centralised IT strategy.
Oracle-Sun virtualisation plans come into focus
Now that the Oracle-Sun Microsystems acquisition is official, future Oracle-Sun virtualisation plans are coming to light. Oracle executives stressed the value of their combined virtualisation assets during a press conference today, less than a week after the European Commission finally approved the $7.4 billion deal.
UK government plans £3.2 billion in public sector ICT savings
The UK government has announced that it expects to makes savings of £3.2 billion annually from 2013 through transforming public sector IT. The new ICT strategy will focus on ways to achieve cheaper and greener public sector infrastructure. The news has been welcomed by the Objective Corporation, which says it will please the UK tax payer. The government plans to create one secure and flexible network so every area of the government can adapt its ICT strategy.
Oracle caves, finally calls everything cloud
In a stunning reversal, software firm and now SPARC-provider Oracle announced today that it has bowed to two years of relentless hype and will finally use the term cloud computing for its business products. The firm said in a press conference that Oracle was redefining the popular neologism to mean everything Oracle already did for systems management plus Sun's grid and virtualisation technologies. Edward Screven, chief of important things, also said that Oracle would make an online version of Sun's OpenOffice called Oracle Cloud Office.
Logicalis launches Cooperative Enterprise Cloud Service
Reseller Logicalis has launched a Cooperative Enterprise Cloud Service, following the recent formation of its cloud consulting group. The service is built on Cisco's Unified Computing System (UCS) and NetApp storage and offers a single reference blueprint for on-site and hosted cloud services. In addition, on-site services are delivered through the company's Bespoke On-Site Cloud Service (BOCS). This computing and storage infrastructure uses Cisco's UCs computing platform to allow virtualised and non-virtualised applications to coexist on the same platform.
Surgient cloud kits: We deliver, you build it yourself
Virtualisation and systems management software firm Surgient is offering a heck of deal: For $50,000, it will sell you a cloud kit you can use to build your own! Sears used to sell houses like that -- no joke. Billed as "the fast track to the enterprise world," Surgient Cloud Express is supposedly everything you need to buff up that dingy old data centre to a sparkling, modern, Amazon-like environment in 30 days or less.
Veeam appoints managing director for EMEA
VMware management tools vendor Veeam Software has appointed Daniel Fried as managing director for EMEA. Fried plans to expand the vendor's presence within large companies, across the region, by investing in sales resources. Originally he joined Veeam from VMware, where he was director or partner sales for Southern EMEA. He joined Veeam in 2008, when he launched the company's French subsidiary in Paris. In 2009, his responsibilities were expanded from Southern EMEA to Central Europe.
Secure multitenancy stack for virtual server environments launched by NetApp, Cisco and VMware
NetApp Inc., Cisco Systems Inc. and VMware Inc. are continuing the trend of vendor alliances to build end-to-end stacks in support of server virtualisation and cloud storage applications. The three vendors released a reference architecture for secure multitenancy in VMware-based virtual server environments. The partners say they have developed, tested and validated the architecture, and have made detailed design guides available for channel partners who will take the lead in selling the stack to customers.
Citrix posts solid fourth quarter results
Virtualisation vendor Citrix Systems has announced fourth quarter revenues of $425 million compared to $416 million for the same period last year – a growth of nine per cent. For the fiscal year 2009, the vendor posted $1.61 billion in comparison to $1.58 billion for 2008 -- a two per cent increase.
