Data centre energy efficiency regulations

Data centres are among the heaviest consumers of energy, and the amount of power they use increases every year. The United Kingdom and the European Union have issued a number of environmental and energy-efficiency regulations that apply to IT. Directives such as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, the United Kingdom Climate Change Act and the UK Carbon Reduction Commitment all affect how data centres do business. In addition, optional programs such as the Data Centre Code of Conduct aim to promote data centre energy efficiency. This section covers how to understand and comply with the myriad environmental policies that impact your IT department.
